  • As we enter a new academic year we have many of the SAR people moving into the next stages of their career, and would like to wish them all the best for success:

    - Dr. Karthi Umapathy has joined the Department of ELCE at Ryerson University as an Assistant Professor.
    - Dr. Yunfeng Wu will join Xiamen University as an Associate Professor.
    - Mehrnaz Shokrollahi will pursue a PhD in SAR at Ryerson University.
    - Elnaz Shokrollahi will pursue a PhD at the University of Toronto.
    - Peyman Shokrollahi will pursue a PhD at the University of Toronto.
    - Oto Janousek has returned to the Czech Republic to continue doctoral studies.
    - Golafsoun Ameri will pursue MASc in Medical Physics at Ryerson University.
    - Navid Zohouri and Angela Ip will commence the 2nd year of the BME at Ryerson University.

  • Sri Krishnan is appointed as Interim Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Programs for the Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Science.
  • Golafsoun Ameri is awarded NSERC USRA to work in the area of multiscale biomedical modeling.
  • All nine papers are submitted by SAR to IEEE EMBC 2009 and World Congress on Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering are accepted.
  • Oto Janousek joins SAR lab as a visiting PhD student from Brno, Czech Republic.
  • Andrea Nia Quing joins SAR lab as a visiting PhD student from Beijing, China.
  • Sri Krishnan is listed in the 100th edition of Canada's Who's Who.

2008

  • Sri Krishnan delivers the plenary speech in the 2008 Biosignals Conference held in Bruno, Czech Republic.
  • Sri Krishnan and Karthi Umapathy organize a half-day workshop in the IEEE EMBC 2008 Conference in Vancouver.
  • Elnaz Shokrollahi and Talieh Seyed receive OGS scholarships. Behnaz Ghoraani receives OGSST.
  • Claire Winter and Alexandre join SAR as visiting research students from Grenoble Institute of Technology, France.
  • Golafsoun Ameri is awarded NSERC USRA to work in the area of short-time biomedical signal analysis.
  • Sri Krishnan is the General Chair of the 2008 IEEE Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering.
  • Sri Krishnan as the inaugural program director for biomedical engineering develops and implements the B.Eng. program in Biomedical Engineering.This is the first such program in Canada.
  • Sri Krishnan receives IEEE Toronto Section Outstanding services award for his contributions in the successful staging of IEEE CCECE 2008 and his activities with the IEEE Signal Processing Chapter.

2007

  • Sri Krishnan alongwith Dr. Nanthakumar from Toronto General Hospital and Dr. Dorian from St. Michael's Hospital are awarded strategic grant from the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
  • Sri Krishnan is awarded the prestigious Canada Research Chair position in Biomedical Signal Analysis. He is also a receipient of the infrastructure for Signal Analysis Research laboratory from the Canada Foundation for Innovation, and the Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation.
  • Sri Krishnan receives funding from Biodiscovery Toronto to work in the area of auditory scene analysis.
  • Dr. Karthi Umapathy was one of the twenty-four outstanding new researchers and distinguished practitioners who have been appointed as Ryerson University's first postdoctoral fellows and research associates. The year-long appointments represent a major step forward in Ryerson achieving its research goals and are funded by a four-year, $3-million program to strengthen the University's research capacity.   • Mo Aram's MASc thesis work on using Wavelets for Improving Position Location of Stationary Vechicles in Urban Canyon has been awarded Ryerson's NSERC Innovation Challenge Award, and is now being considered at National Competition.
  • Elnaz Shokrollahi and Peyman Shokrollahi are awarded the NSERC USRA to conduct research in Electrogram Signal Analysis for Detecting Ventricular Fibrillation, and Multichannel Signal Analysis for Sleep Disease Diagnosis respectively.
  • Sri Krishnan is awarded the National Engineering Award (Young Engineer's Achievement Award) from Engineers Canada. The award recognized Sri Krishnan's contributions as an educator, researcher and administrator. The full article was published in the May 25, 2007 Globe and Mail.
  • SAR group welcomes two research students from Grenoble, France: Julien Bonnel and Mathieu Parvaix to conduct their diploma thesis research in SAR.
  • Toronto Star quoted the work by K. Umapathy and S. Krishnan on "Modified local discriminant bases analyses of knee signals" as one of the 25 great ideas in 2006. The work was published in 2006 March issue of the IEEE Trans. Biomedical Engineering.

2006

  • Sri Krishnan has been nominated as the General Chair of the 21st Canadian Conference in Electrical and Computer Engineering to be held in Niagara Falls, May 4-7, 2008.
  • Sri Krishnan receives the South Asian Community Achiever award (sponsored by Desi News - Grants) from Premier Dalton McGunity.
  • April Khademi is awarded the 2006 Governor General Gold Medal for outstanding graduate research work and for her extra-curricular contributions to the University life. This is the second Gold medal won by a SAR student in the past four years.
  • Karthi Umapathy wins "Best Presentation" from the SAR 2006 Seminar Series.
  • April Khademi is awarded prestigious NSERC-CGS D3 funding for Doctoral studies in the area of biomedical image analysis.
  • Dr. Krishnan's novel research in time-frequency processing of Vibroarthographic (VAG) knee signals for the detection of arthritis and other degenerative knee diseases receives honorable mention from Ryerson University.  For more information, click here to read the article entitled, "Computer program can accurately detect knee disorders."

  • Tahir Jaffar and Elnaz Shokoralli are awarded the NSERC USRA to engage in SAR research.
  • Danoush Hosseinzadeh has been selected as one of the two nominees to represent Ryerson in the national NSERC Innovation Challenge Awards competition.  His project focuses on the improvement of online security using keystroke recognition.  For more information, please refer here for the article on Ryerson's website.
  • Amir Faizi receives the NSERC CGS-M, for masters studies in signal processing.
  • SAR members Mo Aram, April Khademi, Mahsa Kowsari, Amir Faizi, Aiden Morrison, and Baice Li are each recipients of a 2006 Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS).
  • SAR members April Khademi and Mahsa Koswari receive the Dennis Mock Student Leadership Award for the School of Graduate Studies and the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, respectively.
  • Mention of Dr. Krishnan's New Pioneer Award is published in the Toronto Star.  Click here for article. 
  • Dr. Krishnan has been selected to become the recipient of the 2006 New Pioneers Award in Science and Technology Category and will be honoured at the prestigious Gala Awards Ceremony and Dinner on Thursday, March 30, 2006 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.   • Karthi Umapathy is awarded the prestigious NSERC CGS award. This is the highest scholarship given to a graduate student by NSERC.

2004

  • Shahrzad Esmaili, Arunan Ramalingam and Sri Krishnan are awarded the Best Paper Award in the Annual Micornet Workshop held in Aylmer, Quebec, for their paper entitled, "Multimedia Watermarking and Retrieval using Advanced DSP techniques."
  • Danoush Hosseinzadeh and April Khademi are awarded the Overall Best Paper Award at the International Conference for Upcoming Engineers (ICUE), for their paper entitled, "Source and Channel Coding Techniques for Faithful Transmission of Digital Mammograms."
  • Shahrzad Esmaili earns a departmental nomination for the Governor General Gold Medal.
  • Shahrzad Esmaili wins the prestigious NSERC PGS studies for Doctoral Studies in Audio Signal Processing.

  • Serhat Erkucuk receives the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center award for innovative research ideas on using Chirp and Hough Radon Transform for Robust Watermarking  Applications. This award was presented at the International Conference for Multimedia and Expo held in Switzerland.
  • Sri Krishnan receives Micronet research funding for work on audio retrieval, coding, and watermarking.
  • Sri Krishnan receives NSERC Intelluctual Property Management funding to prototype the high definition audio coding technique.
